While raising two boys I went to
school incessantly, gathering the following: a two-year certification as
a Radiologic Tech from
Colorado General Hospital (and a life long interest in medicine), 9/10ths of a BA in Business Administration, a BA in Cultural Anthropology,
one year of work toward an MA in Medical Anthropology (they cancelled the PhD program I was interested in so I had to scramble) and
an MSPH in Public Health from the University of Colorado Health Science Center. Between the beginning and the end I worked in
group insurance - health, life and accident, disability. I worked for Kaiser Permanente in Colorado for 15 years and it was during this
time that I got my first parrots and met Susanne Cochran of Avalon Aviary in Loveland, Colorado and EB Cravens of Hawaii. Both of these
people furthered my education in things parrot, and instilled in me a love of these wonderful beings.
I've owned six birds - a Jardine's parrot, a Timneh African Grey, two red-tailed African Greys, two browned-necked poicephalus
"Capes" and I've fostered several more. All are African. I have sent all but three to live elsewhere after I was diagnosed with Parkinson's
Disease about four years ago after I retired to New Mexico. It makes me tired, but I don't stop thinking about what we can do to make
these birds happier and healthier in our homes.
Putting this newsletter together keeps me going, introduces me to wonderful people, and gives me a lot to think about.
You will find from what i write that I am fairly opinionated. But I try to back it up with sound judgment and fact.
Animals share with us the privilege of having a soul. Pythagoras
