Linda S. Rubin

"Educating Avian Enthusiasts on Cockatiels, Budgies & Parrots"

Linda S. Rubin is a certified avian specialist, a writer, speaker, industry consultant and avian educator, with more than 35 years experience keeping and breeding cockatiels, budgerigars and parrots. She is the author of the award-winning books, Ultimate Parrot Guide and Multiple Bird Households, along with Cockatiel Genetics Made Easy, and other e-books. Rubin offers consulting services on her website, CockatielsPlusParrots.com.

With more than 300 articles published and an international byline since 1990, Rubin’s writing background includes work as senior editor at Cockatiel & Parakeet World magazine and penning UK and USA columns, including Linda'sthe American Federation of Aviculture’s AFA Watchbird. Rubin has written articles on BirdChannel since 2006, and her features have appeared in Bird Talk, Birds USA, Critters USA, as the sole contributor on color mutations in Popular Birds Series: Cockatiels (BowTie Press), and in more than a dozen international avicultural journals.

Rubin established Tangowood Aviary in 1976 — producing champion budgerigars, cockatiels, and parrots — and is a certified panel judge for the Cockatiel Foundation, and the Society of Parrot Breeders & Exhibitors, judging cockatiel and parrot shows since 1984 throughout the USA, Puerto Rico and Canada. She had the honor of judging three National Cage Bird Shows, and the Canadian National Cage Bird Show, and is the author of the original “National Cockatiel Society Show Standard of Excellence,” and the “Cockatiel Foundation Show Standard for the Ideal Cockatiel.”

With more than 30 years dedication to national organizations, Rubin serves as the specialty organization vice president on the board of directors of the American Federation of Aviculture Inc. (AFA), and as chair of the industry’s top awards — the AFA AVY’s — and as former long-time public relations chair. She is founding president and genetics consultant of the Cockatiel Foundation Inc. and serves on the board of directors of the Society of Parrot Breeders & Exhibitors Inc.

An avid enthusiast in the study of color mutations, Rubin is widely recognized as a leading authority in the United States on cockatiel mutation genetics, and she is the facilitator of the first Cockatiel Genetics Workshops in the United States. She has presented on cockatiels and parrots at more than a dozen AFA national conventions, Canadian conferences, the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants, and other private meetings since 1977. One of her most memorable invitations was as keynote speaker at the First International Cockatiel Symposium hosted by the Australian National Cockatiel Society, and the Native Cockatiel Society of Australia, in Brisbane and Sydney, and as overseas speaker at the Avicultural Society of Australia in Melbourne. While in Queensland, Rubin had the opportunity to travel into the Outback of St. George to track parrots and cockatiels and observe their natural behaviors in the wild, which provided insight into their reactions as pets and on the show bench.
